If you’re a motor carrier, broker, or freight forwarder, there’s a big change coming to how you handle your federal registration. The FMCSA is rolling out a brand-new platform called Motus, and it’s set to go live on May 14th 2026. Motus is the biggest overhaul of the FMCSA registration system in decades. And if you’re not prepared when it launches, you could face delays, headaches, or worse, compliance issues.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is MOTUS?
Motus is FMCSA’s new USDOT registration platform.
The goal is simple: replace a patchwork of old, disconnected government systems with one single, modern dashboard where you can manage everything in one place. We’re talking USDOT number applications, operating authority, insurance filings, biennial updates (MCS-150), and more all under one login.
Right now, carriers have to juggle multiple systems, different logins, and redundant paperwork just to stay compliant. Motus will end that.
Why is FMCSA Doing This?
Two main reasons:
- The old system is ancient. FMCSA’s existing registration infrastructure was built on technology that, in some cases, is literally decades old. Systems that don’t communicate with each other create data inaccuracies, filing errors, and delays. Motus modernizes all of that.
- Fraud is a growing problem. In recent years, the industry has seen a rise in fraudulent carrier identity changes, fake insurance filings, and unauthorized account updates. Motus addresses this head-on with built-in identity verification, business validation, and secure electronic processes designed to shut out bad actors.
What’s Actually Changing?
Here’s what Motus brings to the table:
- One platform for everything. All FMCSA registration tasks handled in one unified system. No more switching between portals.
- Smarter filing. Auto-population, real-time data validation, and smart logic that catches errors before you submit.
- Mobile and tablet access. You can update your registration right from your phone or tablet.
- Better fraud detection. Identity verification and business validation integrated into the system from the start.
- Enhanced user roles. You can assign the right access to the right people inside your company, so the right person handles the right tasks.
Your USDOT number isn’t going away. It will stay as your primary identifier. The system will add suffixes to indicate registration type, but those suffixes are not a vehicle marking requirement, so don’t worry about changing anything on your trucks.
What’s NOT Changing (At Least Not Yet)?
There were some more controversial proposals originally tied to Motus, but FMCSA pulled them back after industry pushback. When Motus launches, it will not include:
- Safety Registration requirements
- Elimination of docket numbers (MC/FF/MX numbers are staying for now)
- Changes to the BOC-3 filing process
Those items will go through a separate rulemaking process with public comment before anything changes. So for now, business as usual on those fronts.
When Does This Happen?
Motus is rolling out in phases:
Phase 1 — December 2025 (already underway) Supporting companies such as insurance filers, BOC-3 process agents, and transportation service providers were given early limited access to set up their accounts and get familiar with the system. They can’t make filings yet, but they’re getting ready.
Phase 2 — Mid-to-Late 2026 This is the big one. Motus opens to all users; motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, and new registrants. This is when the full system goes live and the current platforms begin to phase out.
Phase 3 — Ongoing After 2026 Continuous improvements based on user feedback. You can expect new features and refinements over time.
What Do You Need To Do Right Now?
You don’t need to create a Motus account yet. It won’t be available for most carriers until the Phase 2 launch. But there are things you should do today to make sure the transition goes smoothly.
Step 1: Make sure your FMCSA Portal account is active. Log in now and confirm your account is in good standing. If you don’t have one, create one. This is how you’ll claim your USDOT number when Motus goes live.
Step 2: Verify your Company Official. Your listed Company Official must be the actual company owner or an internal employee authorized to sign documents. It cannot be a third-party service provider or outside consultant. This person’s Login.gov email must match the email used to access Motus, so getting this right now matters.
Step 3: Update your business information. Submit an online Biennial Update (MCS-150) through the Portal’s Registration tab if your information is outdated. Clean data now means a smooth transition later. Outdated records can also cause delays at the state permitting level, which is the last thing you want when you’re trying to keep loads moving.
The Bottom Line
Motus isn’t something to panic about, but it’s also not something to ignore. For carriers with clean, updated records and an active Portal account, the transition should be straightforward. For carriers with outdated information, wrong Company Officials listed, or overdue biennial updates, this could get messy fast.
The time to act is now, while there’s no pressure and the deadlines aren’t breathing down your neck.
Get your Portal account in order, update your MCS-150, and stay tuned for FMCSA’s training materials and webinars as the Phase 2 launch approaches later this year. The industry is moving in the right direction and this modernization has been a long time coming. It’s ultimately a win for everyone who plays by the rules.
