Ask Mike: How can drivers avoid extra costs when their truck’s in the shop?

Have a truck maintenance question for Mike? Ask your question.

Mike’s back! Today, he’s answering: How can truck drivers avoid higher-than-expected repair bills and longer stretches of downtime when their truck is getting worked on in the shop?

Well, in this case, it all comes down to knowing what questions to ask. Here are four questions Mike advises all drivers to ask before anyone touches their truck.

1. Are your mechanics certified for heavy duty vehicles?

Don’t let an unqualified mechanic work on your truck. Look for all necessary certifications.

2. Do you have a warranty on repairs and replacement parts?

Ask the shop up front whether there’s a warranty on repairs and replacement parts. Get in writing what’s covered, how long it’s covered and what voids the warranty.

3. Can you provide me with a written estimate and breakdown of the repairs?

While you’re getting a written confirmation of a warranty, also get a written estimate of costs and a breakdown of what work is to be done. If the repair isn’t on the summary, then a reputable shop will call you before doing anything.

4. What is the estimated timeframe for these repairs?

Time is money in trucking. Nobody wants extended downtime. A good shop will be honest with you and not string you along.
