Have a truck maintenance question for Mike? Ask your question.
Today’s first question is for the those who are new or thinking of taking up a career in trucking.
What should new drivers know before starting a career in trucking?
Before you start a career in trucking, it’d be good to know about a few basic truck maintenance items.
- Know how to tell when fluids, coolant or oil may be contaminated.
- Know how to detect air and fluid leaks.
- Always keep wrench, screwdriver and small socket sets in your truck. Tape, zip strips and hose clamps are also great to have on hand for emergency repairs
What should drivers do before they start a haul?
Mike also answered what all drivers need to do before they head out on the road.
- Always do a walk-around.
- Check fluids. Make sure the truck is topped off on coolant and oil.
- Make sure your belts are in good condition.
What makes truck repairs more difficult now than in the past?
Mike had a quick answer for this third question: It’s the electrical system.
That was the toughest part when he started 35 years ago and it still is.
Who can you trust for repairs?
For this last question, Mike says it’s best to look up reviews online to find a good, reputable truck repair shop. There are a lot of good mechanics and shops out there, but there are also some that will take advantage of you, too.
